LED and HID Upgrades now MOT Fail

For many years HID upgrades with bulbs have been an MOT fail / not legal for road use however recent changes also means now full headlamp light units with halogen or LEDs are now also a fail. A fail does mean not legal for use on the road which can also impact on the likes of being insured. Insurance companies are not allowed to insure you if what you have is not road legal… easiest way to put it

This is the wording changes from DVSA

4. Lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment

4.1.4 Headlamps – Compliance with requirements – Changed sentence from ‘Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with HID bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.’ to ‘Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.’
